EXIT 9 percussion group is one of the most exciting percussion ensembles on the scene today. They play music of all styles for all types of audiences. From ragtime xylophone and steel pan calypso to West African drumming or any one of their exciting newly commissioned works, EXIT 9 delivers.
Formed in the spring of 2002 as the graduate percussion quintet of Rutgers University, the group has always approached music making with the utmost dedication and enthusiasm. With an eye toward creating a fresh and unconventional audience experience, the group has performed in front of thousands of people over the last three years, both in the US and abroad, and continue to base themselves in the New Jersey/metro-NYC area.
The members of the quartet each possess strong, well-rounded musical and percussive backgrounds. Having graduated from different college percussion programs across the US before meeting in New Jersey, each member brings a unique dynamic to the group. EXIT 9’s strength lies in their ability to bring together their diverse backgrounds and expertise to approach a level of musical expression, exploration, communication and improvisation that few chamber groups attain.
EXIT 9 is devoted to performing the core repertoire for percussion quartet as well as commissioning new music and collaborating with artists in all fields, including film and dance, in order to reach a wider audience and explore uncharted artistic frontiers. In addition, EXIT 9 is committed to respectfully developing their knowledge and execution of music and culture from all over the world, including Africa, Asia, South America, and the Caribbean. EXIT 9 members have traveled around the world, not only as performers, but also as students of music, constantly exploring the musical traditions of new cultures.
Witnessing an EXIT 9 concert is both an aural and visual experience. The vast collection of instruments from all over the world intrigue, the physical intensity excites, the delicate attention to detail satisfies, and the variety of music keeps the audience on its toes, and always asking for more!
